For example:

This house in Pahoa (Island of Hawaii - you know... the Big Island) was originally listed at its appraisal price, $269,000.00. It is brand new construction with 3 bed rooms, 2.5 baths, 1248 sq. ft. Because the family is being transferred to Australia, they need to sell it quickly. It is currently listed at $169,000. For an additional $20k you can buy the empty lot next to it, too.

I came across a lot of house that needed to be sold because the owner is being transferred internationally. Is Hawaii the stopping ground for people being sent to Australia and Asia? It would make sense if it were, but it probably doesn't make sense to buy a house where you are only living temporarily.
Honestly though, this house is too big for us. When we are finally able to move the boys will all be over 18. (Unless we decide to say "to hell with it!" and do it without such a huge security net. Maybe just a big one will do?) We would be happy with a nice 1 or 2 bedroom place and no $800 a month electric bill, thankyouverymuch.
Another interesting thing about housing in Hawaii is that many of the houses have these small guest house/cottage things out back. Quite a few of the rental properties I have come across are these back cottage things. Not that I want to be a landlord, but having an additional $1200 or so to pay toward your mortgage is a big incentive!

Why don't you move sooner rather than later? I'm assuming that it's because your husband wants to stay with his current place of employment. But if he did find a place to work in Hawaii then you could realize your dream that much sooner!
That isn't a bad house at all, makes me want to start looking for jobs in Hawaii!
I know, it seems crazy to not go now, doesn't it? The big reason is that Marty loves the company he works for and they don't have a Hawaii location.
Another reason is that from what we have been told it is really, really expensive to live there. (Don't be surprised if everyone you know works 2 or 3 jobs, learn to like canned fruit instead of fresh, that kind of expensive.) With three boys nearing college, we would like to be able to help them as much as we can (I don't believe in paying for it all, though.) If we live in Hawaii I don't see that as a possibility. Plus, if it is just the two of us it will be a lot easier to financially survive the 'trial period' all of the books recommend.
But all of that said, I would drop everything and go in a heartbeat if Marty found a job there that paid enough. (Spago in Maui is looking for an AGM and I almost submitted his resume. How bad would he kill me if he was offered the job? lol)
Kim - I found a bunch of houses like that. I don't know if it has to do with the current mortgage crisis we have here on the mainland, or if it really is that everyone is being transferred internationally. Whatever the reason, it really works in the buyers favor!
